Since 1954 drivers have viewed Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio as the ruler by which to gauge their success and adaptability.

For sixty years the “Big E” has played host to the biggest names in auto racing.   Drivers like AJ Foyt tackled the ½-mile high banks, and now in 2014 names like Andretti (Aldo’s grandson Jarett is a USAC regular) are still trying to master the track. Tucked into the hills and narrow winding roads of northeast Kentucky sits one of the fastest and toughest dirt tracks in the nation; Florence Speedway.    The Walton, Kentucky track has been considered one of the toughest to tame by many of dirt Late Model racings fiercest competitors.  Because of its reputation, Florence is also the perfectly fitting home of the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame. Every June, a serene rural landscape in northern Ohio metamorphosis into a metropolis of sorts; almost overnight flat fields become campgrounds with thousands of American and racing flags flaying proudly, and all for one racing event.

The rumble of race engines, and the smell of race fuel burning; for me those are the true signs of spring and after a very long winter it was wonderful to fill my senses with spring this past weekend at Crystal Motor Speedway.

Frigid!  It is the single word that best describes the kick-off for the 2014 Rally America series.  Typically that would not be a favorable word to describe a rally race, but when the first event of the season is named the Sno*Drift Rally, extremely cold temps are always a very real possibility. On Saturday summer nights the quaint lake town of Crystal, Michigan changes from a serene village into a rumbling race town.

Just one block from the town’s main street, Crystal Motor Speedway multiplies the town’s population on race night.   The 3/8-mile clay oval plays host to six divisions nightly and focuses on family fun.  Whether you are visiting for the first time or you’re your tush is in the grandstands every week you can’t help but feel a part of the speedway when walking in the gate.
